"Everything you do will be recorded"

"Apocalypse Then"

En el Washinton Post de hoy:

"The last time Earth experienced a mass extinction, some 65 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous period, there is little doubt about what happened. A humongous meteor slammed into the Yucatan Peninsula, incinerating everything around for thousands of miles. Plumes of vaporized rock blanketed the planet in a layer of thick ash, blocking the sun and choking off photosynthesis. The entire global ecosystem virtually collapsed in a geological eye-blink."

De Mind Hacks hoy:

"Controversial artificial intelligence researcher and maverick cognitive science visionary Chris McKinstry took his own life last month...

Chris posted his intentions to end his life online, and, cognitive scientist to the end, finished it thus:

Oh and BTW, the mind is a maximum hypersurface and thought a trajectory on it and the amygdala and hippocampus are Hopf maps of it. No one knew this before me, and it seems no one cares. So be it. My time will come in a hundred or a thousand years when the idea again returns."

Mierda.

The Coming Dark Age

El sitio Plausible Futures cito ayer este sitio The Coming Dark Age.

"Western society displays the classic symptoms of a civilisation in decline. It is destined to collapse--just like every other civilisation there has ever been. The world will then enter a new dark age. This will be a time of great turmoil, suffering and insecurity. It will also be a time of opportunity and creativity. When the dark age ends, other nations and races are likely to take up the baton of human progress. They will lead the world in a new era of tremendous achievement. "

Parece ser un sitio muy contundente. Tiene varios ensayos, un libro --

una sala de discusión, etcetera.

Lo agregaré a mis fuentes.

"A former registered nurse who has worked with hundreds of clients, including many children, will be revealing evidence of their encounters with extraterrestrial beings at an upcoming conference in Montreal, Canada.

After a decade of research as a professional counselor and clinical hypnotherapist, Australia’s Mary Rodwell says that there is now enough evidence to conclude that these “beings” appear to come from other planets and other dimensions parallel to our own.

She will be making her presentation at the 31st annual conference of the International Institute of Integral Human Sciences (IIIHS) taking place in Montreal May 5th to 14th, 2006."

"I.B.M. researchers plan to describe an advance in chip-making on Monday that could pave the way for new generations of superchips. The development, which comes from materials research in the design of advanced lenses and related technologies, will make it possible to create semiconductors with wires thinner than 30 nanometers, one-third the width in today's industry-standard chips."

Compassion for Cheney as Victim Heads Home
By RICK LYMAN

CORPUS CHRISTI, Tex., Feb. 17 — Declaring that "accidents do and will happen," the 78-year-old man who was shot by Vice President Dick Cheney at a weekend quail hunt emerged from the hospital here Friday looking tanned, cheery, robust and speckled with bruises.

The patient, Harry M. Whittington, an Austin lawyer and well-known figure in the state's Republican Party, thanked his doctors, praised the news media and expressed sorrow that the whole incident had become such a political flashpoint for the vice president.

"This past weekend encompassed all of us in a cloud of misfortune and sadness that is not easy to explain, especially to those who are not familiar with the great sport of quail hunting," Mr. Whittington said.
"My family and I are deeply sorry for all that Vice President Cheney and his family have had to go through this past week," he added.

Dressed in a dark suit, white shirt and gold tie, with only a few scratches and purplish blotches visible above his crisp collar, Mr. Whittington walked out of the hospital and spoke for slightly more than three minutes, taking no questions.

He neither recounted what happened late last Saturday afternoon on the Armstrong Ranch, in Kenedy County to the south, nor revealed any new details about the shooting. Instead, he insisted — as the vice president and others in the hunting party have, and as the local county sheriff has since ruled — that it had simply been an accident.

"We all assume certain risks in whatever we do, whatever activities we pursue, and regardless of how experienced, careful and dedicated we are," Mr. Whittington said, "accidents do and will happen, and that's what happened."

Mr. Cheney said he had mistakenly struck Mr. Whittington in the face, neck and chest with birdshot while following a flushed quail with his 28-gauge Perazzi shotgun. The vice president said that he was not aware Mr. Whittington had returned to the group after leaving to retrieve some downed birds, and that he pulled the trigger before realizing the lawyer was nearby and in the line of fire.

The vice president and Mr. Whittington had been guests of the Armstrong family, which has owned the historic South Texas ranch since 1852 and frequently use the game-rich property to entertain major political figures and business leaders. Mr. Cheney had hunted there often.

News of the shooting did not emerge from the ranch for 18 hours, when a co-owner, Katharine Armstrong, who had been among the hunting party, called The Corpus Christi Caller-Times. Not until Wednesday did Mr. Cheney speak publicly about the incident, conducting an exclusive interview with Fox News in which he took full responsibility for what happened.

The vice president made brief mention of the incident again on Friday while addressing the Wyoming Legislature in Cheyenne. After taking the rostrum before a standing, cheering crowd of lawmakers and guests, Mr. Cheney said the warm greeting was welcome, especially, he added, "when you've had a very long week."

"Thankfully," he added, "Harry Whittington is on the mend and doing very well."

He said nothing else about the shooting.

Mr. Cheney spoke for just over 15 minutes, mainly reminiscing about his years in Wyoming and his political start as an intern at the Capitol in 1965.

At Christus Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-Memorial, Dr. David Blanchard, the chief of emergency care, said that starting Friday, Mr. Whittington would complete his recovery at home in Austin.

Earlier, doctors had said he might need to remain under observation for several more days, as he still had as many as 200 pellets in his body. Mr. Whittington suffered a mild heart attack on Tuesday because one of those pellets had lodged in his heart.

Mr. Whittington spoke in a firm, slightly raspy voice on Friday, and referring to Mr. Cheney and his family, he said: "We send our love and respect to them as they deal with situations that are much more serious than what we've had this week. And we hope that he will continue to come to Texas and seek the relaxation that he deserves."

"Greenland's glaciers are melting into the sea twice as fast as previously believed, the result of a warming trend that renders obsolete predictions of how quickly Earth's oceans will rise over the next century, scientists said yesterday...

While sea-level increases of a few feet may not sound like very much, they could have profound consequences on flood-prone countries such as Bangladesh and trigger severe weather around the world.
"The implications are global," said Julian Dowdeswell, a glacier expert at the University of Cambridge in England who reviewed the new paper for Science. "We are not talking about walking along the sea front on a nice summer day, we are talking of the worst storm settings, the biggest storm surges . . . you are upping the probability major storms will take place."

"It's wrong, I think, to call what's coming the "War with Iran," when actually it's just another campaign in the Long War that's intended to survive us, and walk the world through its greatest crisis of conflict and resolution. This is spelled out clearer than ever in the Pentagon's latest Quadrennial Defense Review, a .pdf of which can be read here. (See also this thread on the RI discussion board.)"

“The DVD containing the material includes a June 6, 2004, CID investigation report written by Special Agent James E. Seigmund. That report includes the following summary of the material included: "A review of all the computer media submitted to this office revealed a total of 1,325 images of suspected detainee abuse, 93 video files of suspected detainee abuse, 660 images of adult pornography, 546 images of suspected dead Iraqi detainees, 29 images of soldiers in simulated sexual acts, 20 images of a soldier with a Swastika drawn between his eyes, 37 images of Military Working dogs being used in abuse of detainees and 125 images of questionable acts."

“As for me, I didn’t understand why I was in that place either, watching through my fingers—or why I’d found myself in similar places many times during the past few years, at The Devil’s Rejects, Saw, Wolf Creek, and even (dare I blaspheme?) The Passion of the Christ. Explicit scenes of torture and mutilation were once confined to the old 42nd Street, the Deuce, in gutbucket Italian cannibal pictures like Make Them Die Slowly, whereas now they have terrific production values and a place of honor in your local multiplex. As a horror maven who long ago made peace, for better and worse, with the genre’s inherent sadism, I’m baffled by how far this new stuff goes—and by why America seems so nuts these days about torture.”

Turing... Pt. 2

"Turing’s paper claimed that suitably programmed digital computers would be generally accepted as thinking by around the year 2000, achieving that status by successfully responding to human questions in a human-like way. In preparing his readers to accept this idea, he explained what a digital computer is, presenting it as a special case of the “discrete state machine”; he offered a capsule explanation of what “programming” such a machine means; and he refuted—at least to his own satisfaction—nine arguments against his thesis that such a machine could be said to think. (All this groundwork was needed in 1950, when few people had even heard of computers.) But these sections of his paper are not what has made it so historically significant. The part that has seized our imagination, to the point where thousands who have never seen the paper nevertheless clearly remember it, is Turing’s proposed test for determining whether a computer is thinking—an experiment he calls the Imitation Game, but which is now known as the Turing Test."

--Pope's Batman will battle his own villains. The series is set in a high-anxiety future, where totalitarianism has nearly snuffed out the remnants of humanity. America in 2039 is a police state, individual liberties have been curtailed, and there's a dark sense of impending doom. Roving police squads, Blade Runner-esque floating vehicles, and robotic watchdogs scan the skyline. A distressed-looking Batman is the only person Big Brother fails to track, and the superhero's mask symbolizes the last hope against a corrupt government encroaching on individual privacy. "He's someone with the body of David Beckham, the brain of Nikola Tesla, and the wealth of Howard Hughes, who is pretending to be Nosferatu," Pope says. --

Look out. Here it comes...

Vamos a pasear.)

LIFT: Life, Ideas, Futures, Together.

Acá están las teleconferencias.

The End of the Moon. Pt. 2

Turing

Neurohacking: this is your brain on bioregulators
